The time has come up once more to share with you a completed project. Nicknamed the “General’s Pad” after one of Madrid’s neighborhood near the famous (or not) soccer stadium Santiago Bernabeu where every street boasts the name of generals of the Franco regime, this original fifties flat underwent a major renovation. We turned this eighty square meter, crammed six rooms and one bathroom flat, into a bright and modern living space with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a large open concept living area.
My Hong-Kong based client gave me pretty free creative reign to design the space after we worked out the final floor plan. He had seen and liked the feel of my “vintage meets modern” renovation and was happy to partially furnish the flat, meant to go on the long term rental market, with a similar laid back vibe to it. The space we had at hand was pretty bland without any prominent features that would dictate a particular style and after he sent me pictures of another of his properties furnished in a rather contemporary way I came up with the following mood board:

As the properties I design are mostly meant for the rental market, part of my creative process involves creating an imaginary client, whose personality I base my design upon. The General’s Pad client was a young man, the grandson of the general, whose interior was a mix of inherited mid-century pieces with modern clean-lined new acquisitions. The color palette was to be masculine based on military hues like navy and olive green with accents of mustard, on a canvas of grey and black. In the final design the proportions of yellow and green ended up being slightly different and I introduced some more natural tones, but the design kept this masculine mood.
